Advanced Belaying

This course is has been designed using the latest research from DAV and Edelrid. We will workshop a wide variety off different devices and practice catching falls with a mass, not a climber so we can really push the limits of what is possible!

Prerequisites – Confident at lead belay

Course content

  • Perfect lead belay technique
    • Position
    • Stance
    • Correct amount of slack
  • Weight difference 
    • Light Climber / Heavy belayer
    • Heavy Climber / Light belayer
  • Holding falls 
    • How and when to ‘Hard’ and ‘Soft’ catch
    • How to guard against unexpected falls 
  • Use a wide variety of different assisted braking devices
    • GriGri, Smart, Revo, Pilot, Matik and more
  • Learn the limits of assisted braking devices
    • How and when do they assist the braking
    • How and when they don’t assist brake
  • Using friction only belay devices
    • Holding falls
    • Belaying for trad climbing

Even if you are an experienced lead belayer, this is a good opportunity to practice, experiment and hone your belaying skills with a dropping mass rather than your climbing partner.
