Winter Mountaineering emergency shelters shovel up

A shovel up is an emergency shelter you can build in relatively shallow snow, you don’t need a slope and you don’t need to be on the lea side of the hill. So reducing the chance of straying into dangerous avalanche territory. They are quick to build and the hole group can get involved to keep warm.

Emergency shelters are an important part of a winter mountaineers knowledge, and its best not to try and build your first one in an emergency!!

This was part of a 5 day introduction to winter mountaineering course I was delivering for the Army.
