Boulder Wall Instructor BWI

This is what you need before you book onto a Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI) training course

• 16 years old (18 at assessment)
• You should have at least 3 months of experience of using indoor/artificial bouldering walls, including a major public bouldering centre.
• You should have an interest in bouldering and in supervising groups bouldering.

Next you will need to join a mountaineering council (British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland)

Then you will need to go to Mountain Training and create yourself an account and then register for the Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI).

This is what you need to do before you attend your Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI) training course

You will need to log the following in your Mountain Training DLOG

• Visits to 3 different indoor/artificial bouldering walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public bouldering centre.
• Personal bouldering at V2 or above.

The Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI) training course is one day (09:00-16:00) and is practically based. We will work through the Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI) syllabus looking at everything you will need to know to lead groups. All equipment can be provided.

This is the period between your training and assessment and is suggested as a minimum of 3 months. During this time you should consolidate and practice everything you’ve learned during your training. Try and climb at a wide range of venues, both as an individual and when assisting with the supervision of others.

The assessment is designed for you to show your best and is run in a relaxed manner. We will work through all aspects of the syllabus in a practical way and discuss different options. I see this as an extension to your training course so will try to increase your knowledge and skills.

The Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI) assessment course aims to assess the technical skills, judgements and areas of knowledge deemed necessary to ensure an individual is safe to do so. This is a one day course.

This is what you need to have before you attend your Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)) assessment

• At least 18 years old.
• You must have completed a Bouldering Wall Instructor training course or been granted
  exemption from training.
• Be familiar with the syllabus.
• You must have logged a minimum of 30 personal climbing visits to at least three different indoor/artificial bouldering venues.
• You must boulder proficiently at V2.
• You must have assisted in the supervision of at least 10 instructed sessions on at least two different indoor/artificial bouldering venues, including a large public facility. A session is a minimum of an hour. At least five of these sessions must have personal reflective comments recorded on DLOG.
• You must have observed an additional two sessions run by different instructors.
• Hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 8 hours and relevant to the work of a Boulder Wall Instructor (BWI) holder.
