Rock Climbing Instructor RCI

This is what you need before you book onto a Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) training course

• 18 years old
• Be an experienced indoor and outdoor climber
• Have an interest in supervising groups

Next you will need to join a mountaineering council (British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland)

Then you will need to go to Mountain Training and create yourself an account and then register for the Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI).

This is what you need to do before you attend your Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) training course

You will need to log the following in your Mountain Training DLOG

• 15 led routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection
• 15 led routes at a climbing wall
• 5 led routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs

The Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) training course is 3 days (or 2 days is you have attended a CWI training) and is practically based. We will work through the Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) syllabus looking at everything you will need to know to lead groups.

This is the period between your training and assessment and is suggested as a minimum of 6 months. During this time you should consolidate and practice everything you’ve learned during your training. Try and climb at a wide range of venues, both as an individual and when assisting in the supervision of others.

The assessment is designed for you to show your best. We will work through all aspects of the syllabus in a practical way and discussing different options. I see this as an opportunity for me to increase your knowledge and skills.

The Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) assessment course aims to assess the technical skills, judgements and areas of knowledge deemed necessary to ensure an individual is safe to do so. This is a two day course.

This is what you need to have before you attend your Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI)) assessment

• At least 18 years old.
• Attended a Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) training course (or have been granted exemption).
• Be familiar with the syllabus.
• Be competent leading Sever grade climbs on outdoor crags with leader-placed protection
• 40 graded rock climbs with traditional protection (of which at least 20 must be at Severs grade or above)
• 30 indoor leads at F4 or above and be competent
• 10 outdoor sport leads at F4 or above and be competent
• Have assisted in the supervision of at least 20 instructed sessions at a variety of different venues, half indoor and half outdoor sessions
• Hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to the work of a Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) holder.
