Climbing Wall Instructor CWI

This is what you need before you book onto a Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) training course

• 17 years old (18 at assessment)
• Have a minimum of 6 months climbing experience
• Have an interest in supervising groups on climbing walls

Next you will need to join a mountaineering council (British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland)

Then you will need to go to Mountain Training and create yourself an account and then register for the Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI).

This is what you need to do before you attend your Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) training course

You will need to log the following in your Mountain Training DLOG

• Visits to 3 different climbing walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public wall
• You must be able to lead-belay and lead-climb (personal climbing) and have 10 Fr 4 routes logged
• You will also need to have an understanding of the wider sport of climbing and ideally have climbed outdoors.

The Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) training course is two days (09:00-17:00) and is practically based. We will work through the Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) syllabus looking at everything you will need to know to lead groups. All equipment can be provided.

This is the period between your training and assessment and is suggested as a minimum of 6 months. During this time you should consolidate and practice everything you’ve learned during your training. Try and climb at a wide range of venues, both as an individual and when assisting with the supervision of others.

The assessment is designed for you to show your best and is run in a relaxed manor. We will work through all aspects of the syllabus in a practical way and discuss different options. I see this as an extension to your training course so will try to increase your knowledge and skills.

The Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) assessment course aims to assess the technical skills, judgements and areas of knowledge deemed necessary to ensure an individual is safe to do so. This is a one day course.

This is what you need to have before you attend your Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)) assessment

• At least 18 years old.
• Attended a Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) training course (or have been granted exemption).
• Be familiar with the syllabus.
• Have logged a minimum of 30 visits to at least three different climbing walls
• Have a minimum of 40 climbs logged
• Be confident at leading Fr 4
• Have assisted in the supervision of at least 15 instructed sessions on at least two different walls including a large public facility in a variety of contexts (and log them). At least 5 of these session should have a personal reflective comment in your DLOG.
• Hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 8 hours and relevant to the work of a Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) holder.
