Foundation Coach

This is what you need before you book onto a Foundation Coach training course

• 16 years old
• Have at least 6 months experience of climbing on a variety of climbing walls.
• Have an interest in climbing and the coaching of groups on climbing walls

Next you will need to join a mountaineering council (British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland)

Then you will need to go to Mountain Training and create yourself an account and then register for the Foundation Coach.

This is what you need to do before you attend your Foundation Coach training course

• You need to register for the scheme
• It is recommended to have attended a FUNdamentals of Climbing 1 workshop.

The Foundation Coach training course is 1 day and is mixture of practical and theory sessions. We will work through the Foundation Coach syllabus looking at starting you on your journey to becoming a qualified climbing coach.

This is the period between your training and assessment. During this time you should consolidate and practice everything you’ve learned during your training. Try and coach as many different types of individuals and groups as possible, ideally over a range of time frames and with a variety of objectives.

The Foundation Coach assessment is designed for you to show your best coaching. All assessments are bespoke and start with me having a detailed look through your digital logbook (DLOG) and you submitting a number of lesson plans. After a period of mentoring you will then attend the practical Foundation Coach assessment where you will deliver one of your session plans to a group of people. Either you can provide the group or I can. The practical assessment is a minim of 2 hours contact time.

This is what you need to have before you attend your Foundation Coach assessment

• At least 17 years old.
• Attended a Foundation Coach training course (or have been granted exemption).
• Be familiar with the syllabus.
• Have your DLOG up to date with your climbing coaching experience to include a minimum of 15 coaching sessions since attending training
• You need to have personal reflective comment for your coaching session
• Lesson plans which can be reviewed by me before the practical assessment
• You must be appropriately experienced and qualified to supervise safe sessions in
  the environment in which you choose to coach.
• You must have completed a Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport module.
