Climbing Wall Development Instructor CWDI

This is what you need before you book onto a Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) training course

• • At least 18 years old
  • Hold either the Climbing Wall Award, Climbing Wall Instructor, Single Pitch Award or Rock Climbing Instructor

•  Additionally candidates must have an up to date logbook with evidence of :
• 50 lead indoor routes
• Climbed at three different major climbing walls
• Belayed a lead climber 50 times
• 25 lead routes at grade 6a on indoor climbing walls
• 20 supervising sessions after passing either CWI  (CWA) or RCI  (SPA)

You will need to log on to your Mountain Training account and register for the Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI). Then you will need to submit your DLOG to Mountain Training via the “Send to MT” button in DLOG

The Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) training course is one day and is practically based. We will work through the Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) syllabus looking at everything you will need to know to instruct indoor leading. All equipment can be provided.

This is the period between your training and assessment and is suggested as a minimum of 6 months. During this time you should consolidate and practice everything you’ve learned during your training. You should climb at a wide range of venues, both as an individual and when assisting with the supervision of others.

The assessment is designed for you to show your best and I run them in a relaxed manor. We look at personal climbing skills first and then you will be given mock students to teach for the day. You will work through all aspects of the syllabus in a practical way, if your mock students are not at the appropriate level to teach a particular skill we will discuss different options (You will teach these to the other assess’es).  I see this as an extension to your training course so I will aim to increase your knowledge and skills as well.

The Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) assessment course aims to assess the technical skills, judgements and areas of knowledge deemed necessary to ensure an individual is safe to do so. This is a one day course.

This is what you need to have before you attend your Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) assessment

• At least 18 years old.
• Attended a Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI or CWLA) training course (or have been granted exemption).
• Be familiar with the syllabus.
• 100 lead indoor routes, of which at least half are Fr 6a or above at 3 different major climbing walls.
• Belayed a lead climber 100 times.
• Assisted or observed at least 5 teaching leading sessions delivered by a suitably qualified person. These 5 sessions must have personal reflective comments recorded on DLOG.
• Hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 8 hours and relevant to the work of a Climbing Wall Development Instructor (CWDI) holder.
